This presentation was picture perfect. Zeyad Rajabi displayed what can be done with the combination of the OpenXML API (available free on .NET) and Word & Excel services (SharePoint 2010 MOSS only). He would show a sample of what can be done, then he would dive in to the code to show how it is accomplished. If you want the what and how of OpenXML and Office services – this will give you that.
Word services give you pagination, file conversion, and field calculations. (I'm not sure what pagination gives you as a DOCX file does not have soft line and page break markers.) Excel services gives you processing all calculations and rendering all charts (which is a calculation when it's all said and done).
It was interesting for me because this is what Windward Reports does. We do it with no programming (or MOSS) required while OpenXML & Office services do it with custom programming. So SharePoint has not eliminated the need for Windward. But it was weird to see something that came so close.
